Yuanbao Lanterns Workshop and High Tea Ceremony: Gosford Regional Gallery

Celebrate Chinese New Year 2020 with artist Jayanto Damanik Tan!

Participants will learn the delicate art of folding papers to be made into traditional Yuanbao Lanterns with Jayanto Damanik Tan, a recent Master’s graduate of the National Art School.

These colourful lanterns imitate the gold ingot currency of Imperial China and represent peace and good fortune. Participants will then prepare a Cassava cake wrapped in banana leaf to be enjoyed in a tea ceremony, following a meditation session. The lanterns will be hung throughout the garden for all to enjoy during the Chinese New Year weekend celebration.

Jayanto is a Sydney based artist who was born and raised in a small village in North Sumatra, Indonesia to a Chinese-Malay-Sumatran Christian mother and Chinese-Guangdong Taoist father. His art practice combines Eastern and Western mythologies and tradition, with contemporary art forms to bring together different cultures and communities. He has worked with several Sydney Councils to celebrate and share multiculturalism through his art and ritual performances as featured in the latest issue of Artlink.
