The Northern Lakes precinct of the Central Coast is a water and nature lover's haven. Renowned for its crystal lakes and sandy beaches, this year round destination is for travellers who want to get away from it all and those who do will be destined to reconnect with nature.

The area stretches from Toukley in the south through to Lake Munmorah in the north with a number of charming waterside townships scattered throughout, including Norah Head, Budgewoi, Canton Beach and Lake Munmorah.

As the name would suggest, lakes are a dominant feature of the area and are a hub of activity. Boating, fishing and prawning are favourites of locals and visitors alike. Caf├ęs, restaurants and fish & chip shops can be found scattered along the water's edge. Golden sandy beaches line the eastern side of the region. Soldier's Beach is popular with surfers and any one of the other summer patrolled beaches are great for swimmers to enjoy a refreshing dip in the ocean.

Panoramic views of the Tuggerah Lakes system can be admired from Munmorah State Recreation Area. This 1500 ha National Park is home to a number of threatened wildlife species and also over 200 different native plant species attracting over 150 bird life species. Approx 1.6 km off the coast of Birdie Beach is Bird Island with steep vertical cliffs, an ideal and stunning habitat for seabirds to nest and roost.

The pride of this precinct is the impressive Norah Head Lighthouse taking a commanding position on the coastline. On the weekend enjoy a lighthouse tour to learn about its original and modern day workings. The lighthouse is one of many great locations for visitors to spot a whale during whale watching seasons in Autumn and Spring each year. The lighthouse comes alive with the Whale Dreamers Festival at the start of the Winter each year.

Accommodation options in the Northern Lakes are never far from water and range from family campsites to full service holiday parks and a range of motels catering for every budget. For something a little different, enjoy a stay in one of the self-contained Lighthouse Quarters at Norah Head which offer panoramic ocean views.
