When one thinks of jazz, which instrument jumps immediately to mind?
It is, of course, the saxophone! A voice so strongly associated with this music that one could be forgiven to believe it was invented for it! From the early masters like Sidney Bechet and Lester Young, to Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane; with each new era there was a saxophone voice leading the way. With a rich and colourful history of 100 years, Adrian Cunningham will take you on a historical musical sax tour filled with tales of gunfights, mental hospitals, nudity, and of course, hard swinging Jazz!! Adrian has put together a stellar band for the night:
PETER LOCKE is one of Australia's top jazz pianists and in very high demand. Known as the "Fred Astaire of the Ivories." ANDREW DICKESON is regarded as Australia's most accomplished jazz drummer with one of the most relaxed and effortless techniques. Currently the principal lecturer of jazz drums at the Sydney Conservatorium Of Music while at the same time being one of the most sought after drummers in the country. DAVE PUDNEY is one of Sydney's leading double bass jazz musicians and has played and recorded with Don Burrows, James Morrison, Bob Barnard, Tom Burlinson as well as Adrian Cunningham. Verdi’s La Traviata NY Met Opera – Saturday 12th and Monday 14th May 11:30am - $25/23
Natalie Dessay will put on the red dress in Willy Decker’s stunning production, in her first Violetta at the Met. Matthew Polenzani sings Alfredo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky is Germont, and Principal Guest Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium. Verdi’s La Traviata will show Saturday 12th and Monday 14th May @ 11:30am. Banff Mountain Film Festival – Friday 18th May
Hot on the heels of the largest, and one of the most prestigious, mountain festivals in the world, the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour has hit the road, with stops
planned in more than 390 communities and 35 countries across the globe. It all began 1976, in the mountain town of Banff, Canada, where the week long festival in November attracts over 300 films entries; award-winning films and audience favourites are among the films chosen to travel the world. This year’s Australian tour, will showcase 2 ½ hours of breathtaking films that will transport you from the heart of the African Congo, through deep powder and an emotional rollercoaster with some inspiring snow lovers, to the heights of Mt Everest on a world record breaking Summit to Sea expedition with some very unassuming heroes. Simon Tedeschi – LIVE – Sunday 20th May 2pm – Tickets $28
Simon Tedeschi is quite often described by respected critics and musical peers as "one of the finest artists in the world" making the young pianist's mark on music both undeniable and admirable. Renowned especially for championing non standard repertoire, Tedeschi enjoys a full international performing career. With a successful career already secured at age 27, Tedeschi first performed a Mozart Piano Concerto at age 9 in the Sydney Opera House. He has studied piano in Australia with Neta Maughan for 10 years (between 1990 and 2000) as well as in London with Noretta Conci. Tedeschi has a string of international prizes and scholarships under his belt. This includes winning the Open Age Concerto Series and 'Most Outstanding in all Youth Sections' in Italy in 1994 and taking out the top prize in the keyboard section of the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London (2002), which is open to Commonwealth musicians under the age of 28. Sunday 20th May 2pm. Tickets $28.
